It’s safe to say that viewers are not on board with the prospective new romance, despite Coronation Street fans’ shocking new love interest for Audrey Roberts in upcoming scenes.
Fans of Coronation Street think they have identified Audrey Roberts’s next love interest.
The iconic role on television, played by Sue Nicholls, debuted in 1979. As Gail’s (Helen Worth) mother, Audrey entered the scene and immediately won over the audience.
Audrey’s marriage to Alf Roberts (Bryan Mosley) in 1985 and his tragic death in 1999 are only two examples of the sadness and joy that fans have felt with her over the years. They have also watched Audrey work in Audrey’s hair salon with her grandson David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) and become a great-grandmother to characters like Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon).
She was saddened by the death of her son, serial killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), last year. According to the Liverpool Echo, Audrey, like her daughter, has had a turbulent romantic life on the well-known street.
She started dating butcher Fred Elliott (John Savident) after Alf’s death. Lewis Archer (Nigel Havers), a former male escort and con artist, was also her fiancé. Before his untimely death in 2019, Lewis finally changed his ways and married Audrey.
Audrey hasn’t had a significant other since, but soap opera viewers believe things could be changing soon. Fans post their views online, speculating that she and fellow soap opera icon Ken Barlow (played by William Roache) would fall in love.
On a Corrie Facebook page, an interested fan made the following conjecture: “I just had a crazy idea. Or is it?.. What if Ken and Audrey started dating? Both of them are unmarried and roughly the same age. What are your thoughts, people? Or is that a no-go, in your opinion?
However, not everyone has been won over by the idea of the possible partnership. “I’ve been thinking the same but I really hope not!” said one spectator. “No way,” said another fan bluntly. I’ll stop watching if they do that.”
But some were more interested, as seen by the following person: “I’ve always wondered why they never got together tbh.” An additional person said, unwilling to be outdone, “Audrey is too much high maintenance for Ken.”
Although Audrey’s adventures in Weatherfield were expected to be exciting, “real” love was anything but dramatic for the actress who played the renowned role, Sue Nicholls. Off the cobbles, she discovered her prince charming in Mark Eden, a fellow Corrie star who portrayed Alan Bradley, the infamous villain.
After falling in love on set in the 1980s, the couple had a happy affair in real life and remained married until his tragic death in 2021. Sue and Mark, who met in the midst of the more tumultuous stories on the ITV show, were the epitome of a soap opera romance.
