The late actor Kenneth Charles Cope previously criticized soap stars in a recently unearthed interview.

Former Coronation Street star Kenneth Charles Cope previously criticized the current generation of soap actors, describing them as having “big egos,” being “rude,” and “selfish.” In a resurfaced 2019 interview, the veteran actor voiced his concerns about the industry’s evolution compared to his time on the beloved British soap.
Cope, best known for playing Jed Stone on the Cobbles, Ray Hilton in Brookside, and starring in several Carry On films, passed away last year at 93. He lamented the changing attitudes within the acting world, stating, “Nowadays, so many stars have inflated egos. I never did, and I wouldn’t tolerate anyone being rude or selfish.”
Speaking to RetroBoys.co.uk, he reminisced about treating extras with kindness during filming, especially in tough conditions—something he believes modern actors often overlook. He also recalled how his Coronation Street role initially began as a one-off, portraying a thug wielding a knife and making threats.

Cope reflected on his early days on set, remarking, “These days, so many actors have inflated egos. I never did, and I wouldn’t stand for anyone being rude or selfish.”
Recalling a particular moment on Coronation Street, he shared, “I remember filming outside in freezing weather. The extras had to stand in the cold for ages, so between takes, I’d go over and chat with them. I’m not saying this to praise myself—I just believe that’s the way things should be.”
The actor, a devoted father, also mourned the disappearance of traditional industry roles like the Props Master, which he saw as essential. “I’ve stepped away from the business because I don’t like how it’s run today. Back when I trained as an actor, we had a Props Master who took care of everything and ensured every detail was just right. That level of care is no longer there.”

“Even small details, like checking doors to ensure they worked properly before an entrance, were taken care of. Everything was tested, and the essentials were well-maintained. But all of that has disappeared now.”
Despite his critiques, Cope fondly reminisced about the golden era of his career, especially his time working on the Carry On films. He cherished the camaraderie and support he experienced with fellow cast members, such as Sid James and Hattie Jacques, which he feels is lacking in today’s industry.
“Being part of those films was an incredible experience. I’ll never forget the kindness and warmth the core team showed me,” he recalled.
