Coronation Street fan-favorite Dev Alahan is set to depart the Cobbles after 26 years on the ITV soap following some troubling news – but will he make his way back to Weatherfield?
Coronation Street veteran Dev Alahan, portrayed by Jimmi Harkishin, is preparing to leave the Cobbles after receiving some unsettling news. A key player in many major storylines on the ITV soap for more than 20 years, Dev will soon set off for India.
This follows yet another shift for Corrie, as ITV has revealed a new schedule for its soaps set to take effect in 2026. Meanwhile, the Corrie cast is also experiencing significant changes.
In upcoming scenes, Dev will receive news of his aunt Gita’s fall, leading him to rush to be with his family in India. He will leave behind his partner Bernie, played by Jane Hazlegrove, and his children Aadi and Asha.
When Dev shares the news with Bernie, she expresses a wish to join him – but will she actually go?
In the meantime, Aadi has taken on the responsibility of managing both the kebab shop and the corner shop while Dev is away. The big question is: when will Dev make his return?
This new storyline comes as part of plans to cut back on the number of episodes of the ITV soap, according to the Mirror.
For the rest of this year, Coronation Street will keep airing hour-long episodes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. However, starting in 2026, it will transition to airing half-hour episodes every day.

There will be a reduction in the weekly broadcast time for both Coronation Street and Emmerdale, with each soap losing 30 minutes. Starting from January, Emmerdale’s Thursday episode will be shortened to just 30 minutes.
ITV’s Kevin Lygo has addressed these significant changes, stating, “This new commissioning structure will result in five hours of soaps each week, down from the current six. We recognize this will affect the soap teams, and we will offer support as they navigate these changes. Our decision is driven by what we believe will ensure the long-term success of these iconic programs. Additionally, these adjustments will free up space in the overall programming budget to invest in content that can expand ITV’s audience in a highly competitive market.”
In other developments, Coronation Street’s Dev has been a pillar of support for Bernie following the heartbreaking death of her son Paul due to motor neurone disease, with the emotional scenes airing last year.
Meanwhile, romance is blossoming between Aadi and Amy as their relationship intensifies amidst all the drama, leaving viewers questioning whether they’ll overcome the challenges they face together.
And let’s not overlook Asha, who’s been focused on saving lives as a student paramedic, even stepping up during the shocking incident when Mason Radcliffe was stabbed by his own brothers earlier this year.
