A Coronation Street actor described working on the ITV set as being “like a cult,” “intimidating,” and alleged that the company implemented “methods to exert control over everyone.”
A former Coronation Street actress, Vicky Entwistle, who portrayed Janice Battersby, criticized the show for being “like a cult” and expressed disapproval over the departures of Sean Wilson (Martin Platt) and Bruce Jones (her on-screen partner, Les Battersby).
She vented her frustration in a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter), targeting the ITV bosses.
Vicky expressed her outrage, stating, “I’m furious about how @Brucejonesnew and @SeanWilsonChef were treated! The truth will come out eventually! I keep my thoughts to myself now, but I’m no longer afraid! The lengths that company went to in order to control us felt like being in a cult—it was terrifying!”
She further claimed, “Everyone thinks it’s just a soap opera, but in reality, it’s a tightly controlled cult! My husband urged me to leave two years before I finally did—he despised the oppressive atmosphere. When I eventually walked away, we cried tears of relief. The sense of freedom was incredible.”
Fans were stunned by her revelations and quickly flooded the comments to respond. One wrote, “So sorry to hear that, Vicky. Corrie was so much better in the past when you were part of it. I often watch Classic Corrie during the day. I haven’t watched the current version for at least 12 years.”
Another fan posted, “It hasn’t been the same since you and the others were in it,” while another commented, “I gave up on it eight years ago. All the talented actors have left, and when I occasionally catch a bit of it, it feels like watching a school play with over-the-top storylines. It’s cringe-worthy.”
A third agreed, saying, “I know 🙁 Honestly, I’m surprised it took them 17-18 years to write Bruce out—it kind of shows there’s a lack of ideas. I’ll miss Les’s constant grumbling and complaining!”
Other viewers criticized Corrie’s recent storylines, with one comparing them to being “written by kids,” while another commented, “Watching classic Corrie now, and @Brucejonesnew perfectly embodied everything that made the show great. It’s such a shame they wrote him out the way they did.”
