Coronation Street star faces brutal backlash after Gino D’Acampo comments

Former Coronation Street star Vicky Entwistle faced criticism after publicly supporting Gino D’Acampo and criticizing ITV’s “woke agenda.”

Former Coronation Street star Vicky Entwistle, best known for portraying Janice Battersby on ITV’s Corrie, expressed surprise at the backlash she received after publicly supporting Gino D’Acampo following recent allegations of “inappropriate behavior.”

Taking to X to repost her original comments, she wrote: “Genuinely shocked by the response to my statement. I stand by every word. Unless a woman is sexually assaulted in the workplace, it’s just hurtful words. Are we meant to cry over that? This man was built up to be everything he was said to be, and they can’t suddenly change that to fit a trend.”

On February 10, Vicky Entwistle posted a photo of Gino D’Acampo on her X account, expressing her support for the embattled star.

“I don’t know this man personally, so I have no reason to stick my neck out in his defense,” she wrote. “BUT!! ITV used this man for all he was worth… cheeky, naughty, foreign, hilarious!! It all fit 10 years ago… Now, with this new WOKE agenda, they crucify him?!?”

Her comments sparked backlash from many of her followers who disagreed with her viewpoint. However, her response to the criticism received more positive feedback, as several others supported her by sharing their thoughts in the comments.

“Totally agree, Vicky. I know he was a bit of a troublemaker when he first moved to London, but that was over 20 years ago, and we all make mistakes. He had a family to support. It seems like many of these anonymous trolls who are always offended are just sad, lonely, and jealous individuals who take pleasure in persecuting someone,” one commenter wrote.

A second person agreed, saying, “I agree. Gino has always been the same. That ‘Carry On’ type humor has always been part of his style. ITV is a joke, and a bad one at that. What on earth happened to them?” A third commenter added, “I totally agree. Back in the day, we all joked around, but no touching—just a laugh. And as far as I’m concerned, the TV was happy to show him naked in his apron—they encouraged it.”

However, one follower wasn’t convinced and replied to Vicky: “But nobody knows if all the complaints are just about ‘hurty words,’ do they? There are multiple complaints being investigated by several organizations.”

Gino has “strongly denied” all accusations, which include the use of sexualized and hostile language on set, with his alleged actions being described as “unacceptable, distressing, and horrendous.”

On February 7, he issued a statement to ITV News denying the allegations: “I have been informed by ITN News that accusations have been made about my inappropriate behavior, some of which date back over 10 years.”

“I have never been made aware of these issues before, and I categorically deny the allegations. I would never do anything that could cause upset or distress to anyone. This is simply not in my character. I do not recognize the version of events being presented to me.

“These allegations have never been brought to my attention before, and throughout the period when it’s now claimed I was behaving inappropriately, I have consistently received support from senior executives, and have been commissioned for prime-time programs.

“As a father, husband, and someone who has worked with over 1,500 individuals on approximately 80 productions throughout my career, which I have always been proud of, I take these matters very seriously. The suggestion that I have acted inappropriately is truly upsetting.”
