Coronation Street beloved star Maureen Lipman has announced she’s stepping back from her role as Evelyn Plummer on the ITV soap.

Maureen made her debut on the cobbles in 2018 as Tyrone Dobbs’ grandmother, quickly winning over fans and earning numerous awards. However, the national treasure has now revealed that while she’s not leaving the show for good, she is taking a break from it.

Along with her career flourishing, Maureen’s personal life is thriving as well. In September, she revealed her engagement to partner David Turner, having proposed to him herself.

Now, Maureen has shared that she’s taking a step back from Coronation Street to enjoy a “bit of a gap year” with her fiancé.

“I’ll be taking a break for a while, but I’ll return eventually. I’m not going anywhere permanently, I’ll just be coming and going because I want to experience a bit of life,” Maureen shared with The Sun.

She continued: “David and I are considering having a gap year.”

Regarding her departure from the cobbles, Maureen explained that her exit storyline will see Evelyn heading off to university to study law, encouraged by Roy Cropper.

In her column for The Spectator, Maureen shared that she jokingly asked David if he would marry her, not expecting him to take it seriously, but to her surprise, he said yes.

She explained, “I had been quite opposed to the ‘M’ word, but while we were on a train coming back from Edinburgh, he mentioned that it was the minor festival of Tu B’Av—a day when a Jewish woman can ask a man to marry her.”

Maureen then described the moment she couldn’t resist the playful gesture and got down on one knee while traveling. “Unable to resist the joke, I slid under the table between us, onto one knee, and asked him for his hand. To my surprise and slight panic, he accepted.”
