Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas ‘set to return’ as Jason Grimshaw for Eileen’s exit

He’ll be involved in Eileen’s departure.

Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas is reportedly making a comeback as Jason Grimshaw, playing a role in Eileen’s exit storyline.

Sue Cleaver is set to leave the show this year after 25 years, and her departure has already brought back Katy Cavanagh as Julie Carp. But the familiar faces don’t stop there.

Ryan is now returning to Weatherfield specifically for Eileen’s send-off.

Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas ‘set to return’ as Jason Grimshaw

Ryan Thomas’ character, Jason Grimshaw, was last seen on Coronation Street in 2016, 16 years after his first appearance.

Jason left the Street to start a new life in Thailand. Over the years, Eileen has frequently mentioned her son and even visited him overseas.

Now, despite Ryan ‘retiring’ from acting in 2021, reports from The Sun suggest he’s set to return to the soap.

He’ll be back for a brief stint as the show bids farewell to the long-running character, Eileen Grimshaw. Filming is expected to begin this month.

A source shared with the publication: “It was a no-brainer for Ryan to come back when he was asked – it’s all for Sue.

“She’s like a second mother to him, and he was eager to do whatever it takes to make her send-off as special as she deserves.

“He hasn’t acted for a while, so it’s a bit daunting, but he played Jason for so long that he’s excited to return to the cobbles.”

Sue Cleaver’s exit as Eileen Grimshaw

Actress and Corrie legend Sue Cleaver has made the decision to leave the soap after 25 years portraying Eileen Grimshaw.

Her final scenes are expected to air this spring, as she feels it’s the right time to step away from the role.

In January, Sue discussed her decision to leave on Loose Women.

She explained, “I’m 61 now, and I feel like I’m at a stage in my life where, like most mums, we have responsibilities and other things to think about while raising our families. My son is grown up now, he’s 29, and I have no responsibilities left. I want to do something new. I want this decade to be about me.”

She added, “I really want to empower other women. Society tends to push us aside at this point, telling us to quietly fade away, ‘Your time’s over.’ Well, no, this is my decade. I’m more excited about this decade, and hopefully, as long as I stay healthy, this is going to be the most exciting decade for me. I’m really excited.”

The full details of Eileen’s departure are being kept under wraps, but it’s expected to involve Jason’s return as well as her sister Julie’s cancer diagnosis.
