Coronation Street actress Sydney Martin, who portrays Betsy Swain, expressed being deeply touched as her co-stars and fans came to her support in response to criticism from certain viewers.
Sydney Martin, who plays Betsy Swain on Coronation Street, has admitted to feeling “truly touched” by the outpouring of support from her co-stars and devoted fans. The actress joined the iconic ITV soap earlier this year.
Fans were shocked to learn that Betsy is the daughter of DS Lisa Swain, portrayed by Vicky Myers, who gained attention in March after securing a regular role on the show. Since her arrival, Betsy has added tension to her mother’s life, with the overworked DS struggling to connect with her rebellious daughter after the heartbreaking loss of her partner and Betsy’s other mum, Becky, who died while on active duty.
Off-screen, Vicky Myers and Sydney Martin have developed a close bond resembling their on-screen relationship, often sharing mutual praise on social media. This week, Vicky was quick to defend her co-star from criticism on X after Sydney earned a nomination for Best Soap Newcomer at the 2025 TV Choice Awards, where she’s competing alongside fellow Corrie cast member Jack Carroll (Bobby Crawford).
In response to comments on X criticizing Betsy’s on-screen performance, Vicky defended her co-star, replying directly: “She’s anything but awful. In fact, she’s the complete opposite.”
Sydney responded affectionately on X, tweeting: “Love you, mama bear,” according to the Manchester Evening News. Vicky quickly replied with equal warmth, posting: “Love you more.”
Meanwhile, Corrie co-star Cait Fitton, who plays Lauren Bolton, chimed in with her support, writing: “I’m so proud of you, Syd! Stay true to your beautiful self and keep shining.”
Another fan commented: “You’re doing an amazing job, Sydney. Keep up the fantastic work on Corrie! Can’t wait to see more of Betsy.” A third wrote: “You’re already so talented. Let the haters hate; you’ll always prove them wrong.”
In response to the wave of support, Sydney expressed her gratitude, saying: “I’m truly touched by all the lovely messages. You’ve all made my week—thank you from the bottom of my heart. Kindness is always the answer. xxx.”
