Bernie in Coronation Street received a lot of flak for telling Billy a hard truth that many believe will break him.
The episode that aired last night, Wednesday, October 2, had poignant scenes as Paul’s funeral—which marked the end of his fight with motor neurone disease—played out.
But when Bernie, in a fit of wrath, told Billy a hurtful fact, things took a turn for the worst.
Billy, will you ever get better? Fans don’t think so…
Coronation Street: Paul Foreman’s death
Before his recent passing, Paul’s health had been steadily declining for more than a year due to early-stage motor neurone disease.
He was having trouble breathing at the end, so Summer and Bernie hurried him to the hospital by calling for help.
They informed them there that Paul was on the verge of death and that there was nothing more they could do.
Gemma went with them, but Billy was sadly too far away to arrive at the hospital in time.
Though he did his best, he was unable to see Paul before his death.
Bernie made the decision to tell Billy Paul he was still alive via lying. Billy, not realizing that it was too late, bid farewell with emotion over the phone.
After his passing, the information was kept a secret until last night.
Bernie’s rage
Billy and Bernie had been at odds about funeral arrangements; Billy preferred a church ceremony, while Bernie preferred something livelier.
When Bernie realized Paul’s father Denny Foreman, who was estranged from him, was present, things became even worse. In addition, he was totally inebriated.
Bernie divulged the secret after the funeral in a fit of rage before realizing what she had said.
“I expressed my love for him to him,” Bernie cut Billy off, saying, “He was already dead, Billy!”
Though it was too late, the regret was felt right away. Billy showed up at Paul’s wake inebriated.
Later, in a drunken haze, he tried to kiss Todd when he got home.

Coronation Street Bernie: Fan reaction
Social media users swiftly agreed and chastised Bernie for her thoughtless behavior.
“Bernie is awful to say that,” a Facebook user commented. While another added: “Very cruel of Bernie.”
“Oh Bernie, why did you tell him? There was no need,” questioned a third.
In response, a fourth person said, “Bernie is grieving just as much as Billy; unfortunately, we say inappropriate things and lash out at people around us when we’re grieving.”
It’s unbelievable that she told him! What brutality,” wrote a fifth.
