Fans find abuse horrifying. A Coronation Street star persevered
Star of Coronation Street Cherylee Houston, who plays Izzy Armstrong, bravely stepped out after receiving abuse on the street and was blown away by the outpouring of love from fans.
While out and about in Manchester, where the ITV soap opera is filmed, Cherylee blogged about how she felt when she heard a slur shouted by someone in a passing car.
However, she called them out on Twitter using her presence on social media, saying that attitudes toward individuals with disabilities had regressed in recent years.
I just had some wonderful ableism shouted at me out of a car window while driving “Coronation Street Cabbage,” the woman wrote.
“They were young men if we could travel back 20 years. It’s not a cry of compassion. This is to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of hate crimes against people with disabilities.”
One supporter said, “It seems like as a society we make a few steps forward and then take many steps back,” expressing the sympathy of the audience. How disheartening.”
“Everything seems to have gone backwards, including racism, ableism, homophobia, and transphobia,” another person remarked. Individuals are now blatant. I’m sorry you went through this. Terrible.”
Another said: “It seems like there isn’t much regard for disabled people these days. I’m sorry that’s what they did to you. I hope all is well with you and thank you for speaking up. However, I genuinely believe the writers of Corrie could do worse than crafting that into a sentence for you as an incredible retort.”
A few days later, she also talked with Michelle Dignan on BBC Radio Manchester on hate crimes against people with disabilities and inclusion in general.
She continued: “This is happening an awful lot to deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people.”
She continued by saying that she encountered prejudice every day.
“That’s why it’s so blatent and OK to do it in a way – people can climb over you, stand in front of you, ignore you, not allow you in,” she continued.
She also exhorted people to report instances of discrimination and abuse.
Speak out if you notice something that’s wrong. Don’t let that person accept that abuse, “said the woman.
She continued by pointing to the epidemic as the moment when people began to feel at ease expressing such unfavorable opinions.
Additionally, she told the BBC online that the benefits system’s proposed modifications had fostered the myth that individuals with disabilities are “benefits scroungers.”
However, her admirers showed their love and admiration for the actress by quickly defending her and sharing their own stories.
Cheralyee, who plays Izzy, has been in a wheelchair since she was a child because she has Type III hypermobility, often known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
“If its any comfort, you’re a successful actress in a prime-time soap, and they are talentless, brainless t***s, and always will be.”
In 2021, she received an MBE for her contributions to disability and theater charities.
