While season five of Virgin River has been well-received by viewers, one particular plot point has caused significant controversy, to the point where some Netflix subscribers have threatened to unsubscribe.
Fans of Virgin River have taken offense at the latest episode of the show on Netflix for sending its protagonists on some surprising adventures.
With the highly anticipated release of season six of the cherished rural epic, fans’ passion for the romantic adventures of Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) and Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) is expected to intensify.
Meanwhile, fans are hotly debating the narrative thus far, which includes a contentious moment from star-crossed lovers Denny Cutler (Kai Bradbury) and Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale).
The fourth series introduces Denny as Doc Mullins’ (Tim Matheson) long-lost grandson, embroiled in controversy when he’s discovered pilfering pills from the clinic and shifting a hefty amount of money.
Initially pegged as a potential scam artist, the plot twists sombrely when it’s unveiled that Denny requires medication for Huntington’s disease, an incurable illness leading to the degeneration of brain cells, reports the Daily Record.
However, the romantic tale of Denny and Lizzie has generated controversy among viewers, especially after they decided to go ahead and get pregnant without telling anybody about Denny’s genetic disease and its potential effects on their unborn child.
A Reddit user sparked a furor when they shared the story of a fellow user who had Huntington’s disease but whose parents concealed the diagnosis, saying it served as a warning about what might happen to Denny and Lizzie.
Concerned viewer “OP in this post found out they have Huntington’s Disease and their parents kept it from them,” wrote.
It breaks my heart to read the comments made by people who have experienced similar things. I’m furious with Denny and Lizzie for their careless pregnancy announcement.”
They were furious and gave their harsh assessment, saying, “This is the worst VR storyline imo.”
Another reader expressed disappointment by saying, “I HATE that they made this plot the way they did.
“Huntington’s has a 50/50 chance of being passed down and Lizzie is just all whatever! about it.”
“I don’t care if Denny is the healthiest weirdo in 100 miles,” was the next indignant statement. Writers for VR should be sacked and banned for their work on the pregnant Lizzie plot. The character could as well have been killed off right away.”
The criticism became more intense when someone said, “I draw the line at Huntingtons, super selfish to put that on a kid,” denouncing the choice made by the character.
One especially irate admirer was in the healthcare industry, saying, “I work in healthcare and thought it was f***ing weird.” To be honest, I don’t think they needed to make him ill. I didn’t think it really advanced the plot.”
Uncertainty grows as stills from the upcoming season show Lizzie with a visible bump. It remains to be seen how the show will handle the criticism that has arisen around one of its most divisive plotlines.
