ITV Coronation Street hauled off air in schedule shake-up as viewers ‘gutted’

Coronation Street fans have voiced their frustration after discovering that the ITV soap has been taken off the Friday evening schedule.

It’s been an eventful week in the world of soaps, but fans hoping to catch their final dose of Coronation Street will be left disappointed.

The long-running ITV drama has been dropped from Friday evening’s (February 21) schedule to make room for women’s football.

Instead of Coronation Street’s usual 8pm slot, ITV will air a UEFA Women’s Nations League match between Portugal and England. Seema Jaswal will host the coverage of the teams’ opening Group A3 clash at Estádio Municipal de Portimão.

As a result, soap viewers will have to wait until Monday to see the latest drama unfold in Weatherfield. Many were upset by the schedule change, with one person posting on X: “Genuinely gutted #Corrie isn’t on tonight.”

Another fan echoed the sentiment: “Why can’t the football be on after Coronation Street? Hate when it’s not on.”

However, Emmerdale fans can rest easy, as the aftermath of the dramatic limo crash will still air tonight at 7pm.

The heartbreaking accident has already resulted in the deaths of three characters. Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough) lost her life instantly upon impact, leaving her partner Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) devastated.

Leyla Harding’s (Roxy Shahidi) fate was sealed soon after, as she succumbed to severe blood loss after being impaled in the stomach.

In harrowing scenes, her son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) stumbled upon her motionless body, realizing nothing could be done as she passed away upon arrival.

Meanwhile, Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson) fought for survival after falling into the lake while trying to escape the limo. As she sank to the bottom, she made a chilling discovery—the lifeless body of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter).

Though Amy was pulled from the water, she went into cardiac arrest due to extreme hypothermia, and despite medical efforts, doctors were unable to save her.

But tragedy hasn’t only struck the Dales, as EastEnders marked its 40th anniversary with a live episode that saw the deaths of two characters.

Ahead of the milestone, a devastating explosion tore through The Queen Vic, claiming the life of villain Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman). Viewers had been left in suspense before the live episode, as Martin Fowler (James Bye) was trapped beneath a steel beam in the wreckage.

In heartbreaking scenes, Martin professed his love for Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), vowing to marry her once they made it out. However, despite desperate efforts from firefighters and paramedics, his heart stopped, and he tragically passed away from crush syndrome.

The episode concluded with Stacey clutching Martin’s lifeless body, as the realization of his death spread through Walford, with her anguished cries echoing across the Square.
