Coronation Street icon Maureen Lipman has announced that she will be taking a step back from her full-time role on the cobbles as she embarks on a ‘gap year’ with her fiancé.
The iconic Dame Maureen Lipman, known for her sharp-witted portrayal of Evelyn Plummer, has revealed her plans to scale back her role on the beloved ITV soap to take on a recurring status.
Maureen, 78, who joined Coronation Street in 2018, opened up to The Sun about her decision: “I’ll be taking a break for a while but will return. I’m not going anywhere permanently, but I’ll be coming and going because I’d like a bit more time for myself. David and I are considering taking a gap year together.”
The renowned actress teased the possibility of exploring new acting opportunities, adding: “I’m curious to see what might come my way once I’m out there. Surely, there must be a role or two that Lesley Manville, Brenda Blethyn, and Harriet Walter haven’t already snapped up that I could take on.”

While Coronation Street representatives remain tight-lipped, fans can anticipate touching moments as Roy Cropper opens Evelyn’s thoughtful Christmas gift—a backgammon set that’s bound to bring a smile to her face.
Not long after, Evelyn sets up her new backgammon board in the pub, only for Steve McDonald to accidentally spill his beer all over it. Furious, Evelyn responds by sending Steve a letter, informing him she plans to take him to small claims court.
The drama heightens as Steve presents the letter from Evelyn to Alya Nazir, who advises him to settle the £325 claim for her damaged backgammon set.
Reluctantly, Steve pays Evelyn the money. Later, Evelyn confesses that the solicitor’s letter was a fake and that she had written it herself, leaving Alya amused by the revelation. But the burning question remains—how will Steve respond if he discovers he’s been tricked?
Later in the week, a curious Alya encourages Evelyn to join her at a criminal law lecture, where Evelyn slyly picks up a name badge from the meet-and-greet table.
